Help Us Restore Access to The Soul Asylum in the Utah Hills
Share
Background:
Soul Asylum is a limestone sport climbing crag in the Utah Hills that was developed in the ‘90s. The land is owned by a mining company, and the previous managers allowed climbers to access it. Once management changed hands, previous arrangements were no longer honored, and they had safety concerns (about people going into the mine shafts, etc). The crag has been closed to the public for the last few years, which has been a loss for the community.
Current Situation:
For 2.5 years, SGCC President Todd Perkins has been negotiating with the mining company. He’s attended many meetings to establish a good relationship with them. We’ve reached a preliminary agreement to allow public access to the crag, PENDING liability insurance. SGCC will pay several thousand dollars annually for this insurance so we can reopen the crag, BUT we need your help first.
We need new members/donations to raise money to cover the cost of the insurance so the community can enjoy Soul Asylum once again. As a new organization, we don’t have the funds to cover this expense. Once the money is raised and the insurance is acquired, we’ll announce when access is restored!

Once we restore access, we must be good stewards of the land so the company is happy to let us access the crag. We’re committed to educating visitors, maintaining trails, and re-bolting as needed.
On our website, you’ll see membership tier options. For the Dirt Bag tier, you can pay from $5 to $30; for the Van Lifer tier, it’s $60; for the High Ballers tier, it’s $100; and if you donate $250 or more, you can become a Founding Member.
Each tier offers different incentives, such as discounts at The Desert Rat, Al’s Sporting Goods, Cypher Climbing, Peregrine Equipment, Olicamp, Outdoor Designs, and Outdoor Prolink memberships. You can also make donations without signing up as a member.
WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP RIGHT NOW:
1) Sign up for a SGCC membership and/or make a donation.
2) Like + save our post on Instagram/Facebook. Leave a comment about what Soul Asylum routes you’re the most stoked to get back on (or check out for the first time)!
3) SHARE the social media post + spread the word so we can cover the required insurance expense!
